Surprises Within the Storm

The sky pours heavily of rain and lightning continues to fill the sky several hours after my arrival to this point in time.  Brian continues to ramble on about his Destiny & Fate comics, but all I can think about is getting back to my proper time.

"Jacob, what's with you?" Brian asks while hitting me a foam football.  "I need to get back home," I say, careful not to tell Brian too much.  "Homesick already?  I thought something like this is the stuff that dreams are made of," says Mr. Westor, referring to the strange phenomenon that brought me here.  "I used to think so myself, but right now I can only see disastrous effects of any actions I take here," I say while eyeing an antenna in the corner of the room.  "Hmmm…I suppose that would be enough to squelch anyone's enthusiasm," Mr. Westor thinks while going over the findings of his tests on the processor chip.  "Brian, why don't you go upstairs and get one of your board games," I say while getting up from my seat, inching towards the antenna.  "Which one?" Brian asks.  "You choose, it doesn't matter," I reply.  "Great, then it'll be checkers!" Brian says before running off.  "Good, now's my chance," I think while taking hold of the antenna.  Making sure that no one is paying attention to me; I carefully open the emergency exit and walk up a flight of stairs that leads to the beach.

Walking into the rain with the large antenna in tow, I go to the exact spot I remember waking up at.  Holding the metal object in the air, I hope to trigger another NDE, which will hopefully send me back to where I belong.

"Are you an idiot?" a man shouts in the distance.  "Don't worry about me, I'll be okay," I say to the man, whose appearance is blurred by the rain that continues to get in my eyes.  "Knock it off Jacob," says the man as he rushes towards me and knocks the antenna from my hand.  In that instant, a lightning bolt strikes it with scary precision.  "Why did you do that for?" I say while looking at the man, finding it to be none other than Henry Lyndale.  "That's not how you get back home!" says Mr. Lyndale, whose breath has become labored after running in the cold rain.  "What are you talking about?" I ask with a raised brow.  "The rift…" Mr. Lyndale concisely replies, his eyes showing that he's full aware of the meaning behind those words.  "H…how do you know about it?" I ask with increasing curiosity.  "That's not important right now…it's just a good thing that you warned me about this incident," Mr. Lyndale says while regaining his composure.

"I warned you?" I say, thinking of the ramifications of such a fact.  "Go back to your friends and take it easy for a while.  Once I'm done with my research, I'll fill you in on the rest and teach you how to get home," Mr. Lyndale says before darting off towards a car parked in the distance.  Seeing him drive away, I begin to recall that I was in a coma for two months when lightning struck me as a child.  I clearly remember being torn up over the lost time because it robbed me of my summer vacation.  Still, I'm obviously not in a coma right now…how can that be?  My mind fills with endless questions that make me want to learn more about the rift.  It looks like I'll have to stick around here for a little while.  Endlessly confused, I walk back into the summer lodge where it's much warmer.  Brian is setting up the checkerboard and Mr. Westor is preoccupied with that chip prototype.  It would seem my disappearance went completely unnoticed.

Elsewhere: Henry Lyndale drives down a cracked road, leading to an abandoned factory.  Once he parks in a vacant parking lot, he begins flipping through a speckled notebook, pouring through countless hand written notes.

"Honestly, Jacob, how do you expect me to sort through everyone's notes without a laptop?  Gah, even finding this place was troublesome without GPS.  Has technology dulled my mental capacity?" Henry thinks while letting out a deep sigh.  "Need some help with that?" a woman asks while tapping on the window.  "Jess, what are you doing here," Henry asks while getting out of his car.  "Jacob sent me to deliver another message," the woman says while closing her umbrella just as the rain stops.  "Go on," Henry says while closing his book.  "Don't teach him how to leave until two months from now," Jess says while looking at her hand, upon it a note hastily written with a ballpoint pen.  "Two months from now?  That's when he's supposed to come out of a coma," says a surprised Henry.

"Exactly!  He wants to keep some events unchanged, otherwise he won't become the person he is now," Jess says while running her hand across her umbrella, washing away the ink with its wet tarp.  "I see…" Henry says while becoming deep in thought.  "Anyway, it's time for me to go now," Jess says as she begins to walk away.  "Okay then, I'll see you later…or earlier," says a joking Henry, trying to inject a little humor into their bizarre meetings through time.  "Oh, there's just one more thing," Jess shouts out to Henry.  "Yes?" asks Henry.  "You have to stay here for two months as well.  It's your job to keep an eye on Jacob," Jess says while holding her hand in the air, causing a strange flare in the sky, much like what happened with Felix at the cemetery.

To be continued…
Today, I wrote a new chapter for The Chrono Rift (nearly 9 months since the last). I also proofread the previous six, finding that a lot of errors were in those first drafts. All of which are gone now.
